Do you know the difference between satsumas, clementines, mandarins and tangerines? I had to google it.  It doesn’t help that they often aren’t labeled correctly at the store, if at all.  It seems that many people don’t really know the difference, but what it boils down to is:  Mandarins and tangerines are the same, it’s just that in the U.S. we call them tangerines and much of the rest of the world they are called mandarins.  Clementines and satsumas are varieties of the mandarin.  Clementines are a little more tart, satsumas are a little more sweet.  Some also say that the satsuma has a looser peel.  I’ve been seeing what I have decided are satsumas in the grocery store, all beautiful with their green stems attached, and I just can’t resist them.  I was planning on making this smoothie for about a month, but I swear, people keep eating my satsumas before I have a chance to (side eye, Mr. Briar).

I wanted to give my green smoothie a winter twist.

Anyway, this is very similar to my Tropical Green Smoothie, which is honestly the smoothie that I drink at least 3 days a week.  But I wanted to change it up and do something with a winter twist.  Since the satsuma (or tangerine or mandarin or clementine) season is really the winter, it is perfect for this.  And what other tropical fruit is in season in the winter months?  One of my favorites, the kiwi.  I have been a huge fan of kiwis since I was a kid.  I love the uniqueness of it, the texture and flavor are like nothing else.

As I have mentioned before, I really recommend freezing some or all of your fruit before making your smoothie.

It will really make the smoothie texture so much better, not to mention the taste.  Nothing worse than a warm smoothie, trust me. For this I peeled the satsuma and separated it into wedges, then I peeled and sliced the kiwi.  I only left them in the freezer for a little over an hour, so it doesn’t take that long, although over night would be great too.  The first time I made this I only used water as the liquid and I found it to be a little tart and acidic.  The next time I added coconut water and it was perfect.  Coconut milk (the beverage, not the culinary kind that comes in a can), would probably also be great.  Add some banana, spinach and greek yogurt, and you have a vitamin packed green smoothie that tastes like pure sunshine.  Not a bad way to start a winter morning.

  1. Hi Meghan! Saucy Saturdays introduced me to a new and awesome blog! I haven’t spent much time making smoothies – just a quick banana, protein powder, almond milk, and peanut butter now and then after my workout… This looks so good, and in south Texas where I live now, citrus and kiwi are so available. I will have to try it! By the way, your photos are gorgeous!

    1. Hi Tamera, thank you so much! I only got on the smoothie bandwagon this summer, but now I am totally addicted. It is a great way to get some greens in the morning too!

  2. Yum! Love the sound of this and couldn’t agree more that the fruit should be frozen. Plus that just makes it so much easier! Thanks for linking up at #SaucySaturdays.

  3. This is brilliant Meghan!! LOve love love kiwi..and satsuma!! well i’m all for making smoothies exotic 🙂 Pinning! Thanks for linking up at #SaucySaturdays

  4. Such pretty colors, I have to try this, I love both kiwi and satsumas/clementines/mandarins… 🙂 When I hear the word satsuma, I always have to think about one of the Harry Potter books, where a wizard came to the hospital because he had a satsuma stuck up his nose. 🙂

  5. Such a lovely smoothie combo! I stuck to the frozen mango-spinach-banana combination last year, but will have to give kiwifruit-mandarin a go. I always thought tangarines and mandarins were different varieties, but maybe I’m wrong – will ask Dad (he grew up on a citrus orchard so is my go-to expert haha!). Lovely photos too, you have inspired me to get my blender back out!

    1. I thought they were different too! And google could always be wrong, I know not to trust everything I read on the internet 🙂 Let us know what your dad says. Thanks Claudia!

  6. I feel like I have been fighting a cold for the past month, so this citrus packed smoothie is right up my alley.

  7. I love the lesson on citrus fruits! I would have definitely googled that too. I never knew there were so many varieties! Always great to do a twist on the usual green smoothie. I get little bored of my smoothies some times and this is a great idea! Looks so refreshing!

    1. Thank you Linda! I love that more and more varieties are becoming widely available, it is always fun to try new things!

Well helllllo gorgeous smoothie! Believe it or not I have never had a Satsuma! Obviously I live under a rock. I’ve had clementine before, so a sweeter version of that sounds amazing! A must try… and in this beautiful smoothie for sure! Loooove all the flavors in here! I need a little tropical pick me up with all this cold weather! Pinned! Cherers, girlfriend!

    1. I think satsumas are becoming more popular, I don’t remember seeing them in all the stores in previous years, but they were this year. Clementine or satsuma, they are both delicious! Thank you Cheyanne!

  9. Gorgeous color! I’m always looking for new green smoothie recipes, this one sounds great!

  10. Totally taken with this gorgeous smoothie! And your photos – I have never seen such a good looking smoothie. Gorgeous!

  11. I love kiwi but haven’t ever used them in a smoothie. Will have to try this. It looks so good!

  12. I LOVE smoothies but have yet to get in to the green smoothie world. Definitely going to be trying this out! It looks amazing, fresh, and healthy!

    1. Baby spinach is the way to go! All you taste is the fruit, and you can’t taste the spinach at all! Thank you Ashlyn!

  13. So cool, I love learning new things like that. Green smoothies are my favorite way to start the morning! Love this winter combo! It looks gorgeous!

  14. I’m pretty confused about the mandarin/tangerine/clementine/satsuma thing, I must admit. Here in Australia we only have mandarins, at least as far as I’m aware. In any case I’m sure I could use mandarins in this. They are very cheap and widely available here (well, not at the moment, they’re not in season yet for us – I guess being on the other side of the globe will do that!). I will definitely need to make this when I can get them again. I also most certainly agree with you about the frozen-fruit-in-smoothie thing. I just can’t stand a warm smoothie!! It is disgusting. When I make a smoothie for the two of us, I always drink mine straight away but Daniel will sip on his for up to half an hour before he finishes it! And not because he forgets about it, but because he prefers it that way. Meanwhile I’m practically standing over him asking if he has finished yet as I see it slowly but surely become undrinkable! Not sure why it bothers me so much. Oh and how cute are those straws? WANT! I love me a pretty straw – squee!

    1. Thanks Lisa! I got the straws at target, I am building up quite a collection! And my husband doesn’t like his smoothie super cold either! I think it is pretty weird…

Lovvvve everything about this smoothie! It kind of makes me feel like I’m on a beach when it’s -30 (celsius!!) outside and I’m all bundled up in sweaters and scarves. Can’t wait to try this!

    1. Yes, nothing like brightening up a cold winter day! And -30 celsius! Brrrr, reminds me of winter in AK when I was a kid! Thanks Katy!

  16. Huh, definitely did not know all of that! That’s actually really interesting!

And this smoothie is gorgeous! The color!

    1. I never would have bothered to look into it if I wasn’t writing this post, but I have a fear of writing a post about something and calling it the wrong name the whole time – so I had to google it! Isn’t it funny? And I love the bright green color too, so nice to have some vibrant colors in the winter. Thank you Ashley!

I never understand the difference between tangerines, mandarines, etc. – to me they are all oranges, “small oranges” to be exact 🙂 Your smoothie looks delicious, and it’s a great way to sneak in 2 cups of spinach!

    1. Haha, small oranges is accurate, so it works! I think even the grocery stores don’t really label them right, so the whole world is confused about what they are called. Thanks Melanie!

  18. The pictures you took of this delicious-sounding smoothly are outstanding!! This DEFINETELY will be tried at our house. I’m with you on preferring cold smoothies…I’ve used ice cubes in the past; now freezing the fruit sounds brilliant! You don’t water-down the scrumptious taste!!
    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    1. I really prefer to freeze the fruit rather than add ice, I think it makes the texture and flavor better. We are going on a smoothie kick when you get here! I have a blender now 🙂

  19. I am trying to make a smoothie for breakfast ever day so I’m always looking for new combinations, Meghan. This one looks delicious. And I’m with you on the warm smoothies – no thanks!

    1. Thank you Geraldine! My husband and I drink a smoothie about 5 days a week, so a little variety is great. I am actually kind of addicted to them now!
