DIY Taco Seasoning

Making your own DIY Taco Seasoning couldn’t be easier!  Once you make your own, you will never go back to store-bought again!

I have been a big fan of bulk spices for a long time.  Once you start buying spices from the bulk section, rather than in the little jars, you quickly realize that not only is it cheaper, but the spices are fresher – so much fresher that you will start to wonder if what you were getting in those expensive, prepackaged bottles was even the same thing!  That is the main reason I started making my own taco seasoning, instead of buying it in the little packets.

Of course, another benefit of making your own taco seasoning is that you have total control over the end result.  If you really love a certain spice, you can add more, or if you aren’t a fan of something, you can use less or leave it out.  And not to mention the sodium content!  Those packets at the store are usually packed with sodium, and when you make your own mix you have full control over how much salt goes into the mix.

I made this taco seasoning mix for my Chicken Taco Pasta, and I like to keep a little jar of it in my pantry for other quick weeknight dinners.  This is my favorite mix, but feel free to adjust it to your own preferences and make if your own!

Used this taco seasoning on some ground beef today, and it turned out great! Perfect thing to mix ahead and have on hand. And way better than using the store-bought packets. Thanks for another yummy recipe!

How much water do you add when using this with ground beef?

Hi Shawn – I actually don’t usually add water, but if you you find that you need to I would use about 1/4 cup.

Man, I wish I could get bulk spices! You know how crazy-expensive spices are here! I’ve been ordering from Amazon 🙂 Either way, making your own is definitely the way to go – seriously, all of the sodium in those pre-mixed packages is nuts! Also, smoked paprika is the bomb dot com. 😉 Pinned!

I think ordering on Amazon is a great idea! I order my vanilla beans on Amazon actually. Thanks for pinning friend!

Is there a certain place you can find bulk spices? I feel like every place I check has strictly small jarred varieties. Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places? P.S. homemade taco seasoning is 1,000x better than the packet kind!

I need to try this! I enjoy cumin, but those store bought mixes are so cumin-heavy that that’s all I taste. Kudos the smoked paprika.

Oh, I completely hear ya, Meghan! Those premade spice mixes are much more expensive and you really have to watch for that salt content. Sometimes when I look at them and see what’s in ’em I’m amazed. Like, how can all that salt me in there?? Homemade is definitely the way to go! Your blend looks delicious too. High five for using smoked paprika 🙂 And hello Taco Tuesday 😉 Have a great week, my friend 🙂
