This healthy chocolate smoothie is for when you are craving a chocolate milkshake but you want to keep it on the healthy side.  When Kroger reached out to me to try the new Bolthouse Farms ®  Plant Protein Milk, I knew it would be great in this healthy chocolate shake.

Bolthouse Farms ® Plant Protein Milk is a non-dairy plant-based milk that contains 10 grams of pea protein per serving. One of my concerns with using non-dairy milk in the past was that it usually is pretty low in protein.  For example, almond milk only has 1 gram of protein per serving. Another thing I really like about Bolthouse Farms ® Plant Protein Milk is that it is non-GMO, soy free and has 50% more calcium than dairy milk.  Sounds pretty great, right?

Protein is such an important nutrient for building muscles and maintaining energy, but it can be really hard to get enough of it.  I’m always looking for ways to add more protein to my diet.

What Can I put in my smoothie for protein instead of protein powder?

To increase the protein in this smoothie, I added peanut butter, Greek yogurt, and Bolthouse Farms ®  Plant Protein Milk.

How can I make my smoothies thicker?

I love to use frozen banana in smoothies to make them super thick and creamy.  The key is to use FROZEN bananas.  I also added some toasted oats to help make this smoothie thick like a rich and creamy milkshake.

A few notes about this Healthy Chocolate Protein Smoothie:

Be sure to use a frozen banana – it makes a huge difference with the texture!

Be sure to toast the oats before adding to the smoothie.  This will give them a better flavor, but also helps to avoid foodbourne illnesses.

I added a date for natural sweetness.  Dates are also rich in fiber, calcium and vitamin B-6.

I picked up this Bolthouse Farms ® Plant Protein Milk at my local Fred Meyer, and you can find it at your local Kroger banner store!

    1. You can toast them in a pan on the stovetop or on a sheet pan in the oven. Just watch closely to make sure they don’t burn. They should only take a few minutes to toast.
