The easiest way to make steel cut oats is to use your Instant Pot! Make perfect steel cut oatmeal every time with this foolproof method.
Steel cut oats make a hearty breakfast, but they take a long time to cook on the stovetop. I have been feeding my toddler steel cut oats most mornings because it’s an easy way to pack in lots of nutrients and he loves it! But with a hungry toddler in the morning, I don’t always have time to wait for 45 minutes for the oats to cook on the stove top. Recently we discovered how easy it is to make steel cut oats in the instant pot!
We always make a big batch of steel cut oats in the instant pot, then keep the leftovers in the fridge and warm up for breakfast for the next several days. So not only is this an easy method of cooking oatmeal in the instant pot, but it is also a great way to meal prep oatmeal!
How to make steel cut oats in the instant pot:
The ratio for liquid to oats in the instant pot is 1 cup oats to 2 cups liquid. I like to use half milk and half water to make the oats super creamy and nutrient rich.
- Add 2 cups of steel cut oats, 2 cups of milk and 2 cups of water to the instant pot, stir to combine.
- Cover and set to high pressure for four minutes. The instant pot will come to pressure then cook for four minutes.
- After the four minute cooking time, allow the instant pot to naturally release pressure for 15 minutes.
- Remove lid and stir. Oats will appear watery at first, but as you stir will absorb the excess liquid.
- Serve with desired mix ins. I like to mix in yogurt, peanut butter and fruit.
- Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
Oatmeal is great and all, but what really makes it delicious is the toppings!
What are some good oatmeal toppings?
- maple syrup
- bananas
- apples
- berries
- cinnamon
- nut butter
- yogurt
- honey
- chopped nuts
- dried fruit
- jam
- coconut flakes
My favorite combination of oatmeal toppings is greek yogurt + peanut butter + berries.

If I was going to double this recipe, would I increase the cook time?
Made this for my kids who are not fans of oatmeal. I’ve tried all the ways. But, when this recipe popped up on my IG feed I could tell the peanut butter and yogurt was just the game changer I needed to convince them. It was delish…they loved it!
