You guys. ย How cute are these Red, White, and Blue Trifles? ย I am all about easy desserts that are both festive and impressive for summer BBQs. ย Last year I shared my Red, White, and Blueberry Tartย and this year I decided to go with individual desserts.

I thought it would be cute to add some stars, so I picked up a few mini star cookie cutters at the craft store and cut out star shapes from the angel food cake and strawberries. ย It’s optional of course, but it looks so adorable! ย These Red, White, and Blue Trifles are pretty much a twist on the way we made strawberry shortcake in my family when I was growing up – angel food cake, macerated strawberries and whipped cream. ย I added blueberries for the blue, obviously, which both looks great and tastes delicious. ย I cheated by buying store bought angel food cake, but I’m sure this would be even better with homemade angel food cake – either way you can’t go wrong!

One thing I did not cheat with was the whipped cream. ย Homemade whipped cream is incredibly easy to make and will really elevate your dessert to the next level. ย Once you start making homemade whipped cream you probably won’t be able to buy “whipped topping” or canned whipped cream again!

These Red, White, and Blue Trifles are an easy and delicious dessert for Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day or any Summer BBQ! ย They are super cute but so easy to make!

Ingredients

  • 1 angel food cake About 12 ounces, store bought or homemade
  • 2 pounds strawberries
  • 12 ounces blueberries
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Place your bowl and whisk for the whipped cream in the freezer for 20 minutes while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
  • Remove the tops from the strawberries and dice into cubes. ย If you are making the strawberry stars for garnish, make those first so you can use the prettiest parts of the strawberries. ย To make the stars, cut a strawberry in half and use a small star shaped cookie cutter to cut out a star shape. ย Cut as many as you need. ย Scraps can be tossed in with the diced strawberries. ย Set the strawberry stars aside. ย With the rest of the diced strawberries, toss with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar and set aside for 30 minutes to macerate.ย
  • Cut ย or tear the angel food cake into 1/2 inch cubes. ย If making the angel food cake stars, use a small star shaped cookie cutter to cut star shapes out of a flat slice of cake. ย Scraps can be used in the trifle along with the cubes.
  • Make the whipped cream. ย Remove bowl and whisk from freezer. ย Pour in heavy whipping cream, sprinkle 2 tablespoons sugar on top, and add vanilla extract. ย Beat until soft peaks form (1-2 minutes in a stand mixer, 6-7 minutes by hand).
  • To assemble the trifles, use 6-8 small glass containers such as mason jars, drinking glasses, or wine glasses. ย I recommend using smaller sized glasses, about 4-6 ounces.
  • Cover the bottom of the glass with a layer of angel food cake cubes. ย Top with a layer of the macerated strawberries. ย Top that with a layer of whipped cream, then a layer of blueberries. ย Repeat until you reach the top of your glass. ย Top with more whipped cream and garnish with strawberry and angel food cake stars.

Notes

Strawberries can be macerated and whipped cream can be made up to 2 hours ahead of time, but it is best to assemble the trifles shortly before serving.ย

  1. Simple & so delicious!! I like using rustic mason jars but the wine glass added a gorgeous touch. Thank you.

  2. Oh these look amazingly delicious! I always say I am going to make my own whipped cream but haven’t yet. We don’t always have a ton of room in the freezer and I am not sure my mixer bowl would fit in it. Could I do something like sitting ice water in it for a bit or will that not work the same?

    1. Hi Dawn! I think that would work! Just be sure to dry the bowl very well before adding the cream. I have also made it without chilling the bowl and it will still work. The cream just doesn’t whip up quite as fluffy.

  3. I love how patriotic these are! And I really, really love all of the berries!

  4. 5 stars
