There are any number of things you can drink on Saint Patrick’s Day.  Most people might opt for a Guinness, or even a green beer.  When I was a kid I was partial to the shamrock shake.  But you can really never go wrong with Irish whiskey, especially when mixed with ginger beer and lime juice. It may not be a very traditionally Irish drink, but it still tastes pretty great.

The Irish Mule is really just a twist on the Moscow Mule, but it replaces the vodka with whiskey. The traditional copper Moscow Mule mug works equally well with this drink, keeping the drink refreshingly cold and also making you feel extra fancy while drinking out of it.  Fancy drinking vessel wins over non fancy drinking vessel almost every time.

This drink is a snap to mix up, and before you know it you can be drinking this while eating corned beef and cabbage and singing along to Danny Boy.  I prefer ginger beer to ginger ale, as it has a stronger ginger taste.  I love Bundaberg but feel free to use your favorite brand.  Reed’s is also good, and Trader Joe’s carries a great ginger beer as well.  Add some fresh squeezed lime juice, whiskey and a sprig of mint (optional), and you have yourself the tastiest drink to toast the old country with.

*Ginger beer is to taste. If you like more of a whiskey taste, add less ginger beer. If you like a sweeter drink, add more! I usually just top the glass off with ginger beer.

  1. Does anyone have this drink, Irish Mule recipe in large quantities, I’m making an Irish Mule display at my sons wedding next Saturday as it’s my sons favorite, it will be a nice feature as I bought a hundred copper mule mugs to serve it. So please any ideas will be appreciated!

    1. Hi Melva – I have never made it in large batches, but you could just multiply the quantities by 100 to make sure you have enough. I think it would be better to make them in smaller batches so that the alcohol is distributed evenly (rather than some people getting very strong drinks or some people getting very weak drinks). You could also just have a make your own Irish mule bar with the directions!

  3. Try this recipie with A KENTUCKY SPIN ON IT.
    1-part lime juice
    2-part ginger beer
    3-parts burbon
YOU CAN JUST USE THE BOTTLE OF LIME JUICE INSTEAD OF FRESH LIMES, WORKS WELL FOR ME.

  4. Great recipe, to me it’s the Ginger beer you selected that makes this drink!! P.s a variation remove the mint and add a couple dashes of bitters for a less sweet variation.

    1. Thank you Robert! I agree, the bundaberg ginger beer is the best! I love the idea of adding bitters, great idea!

  6. I personally am not a big drinker. My husband and I came across a pub on our anniversary trip and decided why not. The bar keep asked me a couple questions of what I like and made it for me. Since then this has been my utmost favorite drink.

  7. I have everything for this drink! YAY! Byeeee nasty green beer! Okay, I totally would still drink that too. But whiskey is so.much.better.

  8. Grat cups! Love the twist of Irish Whiskey! We are bourbon drinkers in our house but will be great all the same!!

This drink sounds soo fun! I love ginger beer – so nice and spicy!

    1. Not weird AT ALL. It will keep the wine nice and cold 😉 Actually despite the many cocktails I post here, I mostly drink wine too. Thanks Ashley!

Fantastic! I much prefer ginger beer to ginger ale too. As well as a better taste I think it looks more appealing too – especially when mixed with whiskey and mint.

I feel like you’re really expanding my libations horizon. Is that a thing? LOL. No big celebrations for me for St. Paddy’s day. Just working and baking. 🙂 Happy Monday, Meghan! xo P.S. 17. Oh Lord. This drink is pretty much all me. Irish whiskey is my poison of choice, and I adore ginger-limey things. It’s a supremely underrated flavor combo! I think the best part is the ease., when you want a great cocktail but don’t want to get out all your bar toys. Can’t wait to try it.

MINE. I’ve never had a mule and I now declare that it is my favourite drink. I’m not a big St. Patrick’s Day celebrator, but that’s probably because I once died the milk green when I was little and freaked out my entire family. I think this is a much better way to celebrate 🙂 Pinning! And making!

    1. Haha, I think I may have dyed my milk green one year too. Yes, this drink is a MUCH better way to celebrate! Thanks Katy!
