Looking for a creamy, zesty sauce that is totally plant based? Enter, tahini – the base for this easy sauce that you will love.

What is Tahini?

Tahini is a paste made of sesame seeds that has long been used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. It is often used in dips and dressing, and is one of the main ingredients in hummus.

Ingredients for tahini sauce: Lemon juice, tahini, sea salt, garlic and water.

What does tahini taste like?

If you aren’t familiar with tahini you may think it tastes like peanut butter since they look similar. But tahini has a more earthy and slightly bitter taste, although still nutty from the sesame seeds. Tahini can be used in both savory and sweet applications, and will turn into a creamy dip or dressing easily.

Is Tahini Sauce like Tzatziki Sauce?

No, they are not the same thing at all! Tahini sauce is a creamy and zingy plant based dip or sauce, which tzatziki sauce is a cool cucumber yogurt dip. Both are delicious. Get my recipe for tzatziki HERE.

How to make Tahini sauce

Making this sauce couldn’t be easier. You don’t need any special equipment, although I love using my garlic press here to get the garlic to blend well into the sauce. If you don’t have a garlic press, you can also use a microplane to grate the garlic. Fresh squeezed lemon juice is best here, so a citrus juicer is nice, but not necessary. You can just use a a spoon to juice the lemon.

To make the sauce, simply whisk together the tahini, lemon juice, garlic, salt and water until a creamy sauce forms. Add more water if you want to get the desired consistency.

How long is Tahini Sauce good in the fridge?

If prepared and stored properly, homemade tahini sauce should last up to 5 days in the fridge.
